HILES NEWS
By: Margaret McCarthy

July is here! And even with the rain that we had this weekend, I think most of us would say that it was a great 4th of July weekend-especially since the 4th fell on a Friday, many had at least a 4 day weekend if not a 5 day. And while we can complain about the weather, it doesn’t even compare to what people in other parts of the United States had going on this past weekend. The horrible flooding in Texas took its toll on many, not just the victims and their families, but also for all of the first responders and search/recovery teams. I can’t begin to imagine what they’re all going through, and will for some time. I know I’m not alone in saying that my heart aches for all of them, especially the parents of the camp girls.

While this devastating flooding was on a much larger scale than anything that we’ve ever had in our area, it’s a good reminder of how important the services that our first responders provide our to us and our community. In smaller communities like ours, many first responders are volunteers. Many hours of training goes into each department to be prepared for when emergencies occur-and a lot of times, when the calls come in, they leave their families and friends to respond to anything from a fire, a gas leak, a UTV accident or any other incident. Continuing to support those groups helps a lot as well. One way that you can help is to practice safety both in your homes and as you go about your days. Things like replacing batteries in your carbon monoxide or smoke detectors or getting your chimney cleaned are a good start. While driving, slow down and watch out for people or animals out and about, and if you’re off-roading, along with being a responsible driver or having a designated driver if necessary, only go on designated trails and be respectful of others property. And in your home, it doesn’t hurt to have a plan on what to do if something were to happen.

Another way that you can help is to attend planned fundraisers when you can. The Hiles Fire Department has three upcoming events that they are holding/assisting with. The first event will be the annual Hiles Fire Department Trapshoot. This will be held Saturday, July 19th. It will be held one more time (hopefully) at the Black Bear Trap Range in Argonne. Tickets are available at local businesses or from fire department members. This year, the drawing will be for a Winchester SX4 Upland Field 12 Gauge-currently it can be seen at the Hiles Trailhead Pub. All funds from this event will be put towards the new trap range that’s in progress by the Transfer Station (Dump) on County Road S. Even if you’re not a trap shooter, feel free to come and enjoy the day with the Hiles Fire Department. And if you’re interested in learning about trap shooting-there’s more than enough that love to share their knowledge and probably would lend a gun to try. Food and drinks will be available and it all starts at 8am.

The next event will be the Great Northwoods Music Festival that will be held Friday, July 25th and Saturday July 26th at the Hiles Trailhead Pub. Proceeds will go to support seven local organizations, including both the Hiles and Argonne Fire Department along with local snowmobile and ATV groups. This is a new event for our area that will be a lot of fun and will benefit many.

And last but not least for summer events will be the Third Annual Fire Department Picnic held on Saturday, August 23rd at the Mill Pond. Food and fun are on the agenda for this Saturday with possibly a bounce house. If you’d like to help out at any of these events or donate to them, please let me or one of the other fire department members know.

As you go about your week, keep all who are struggling in your prayers and lend a hand if you can.
