Town of Hiles

Winter Road Maintenance Policy

The purpose of this policy statement is to define the guidelines which will be used in maintaining Town roads and other serviced areas during periods of snow and winter weather. The application of these guidelines is dependent on several factors including weather conditions, availability of road maintenance staff, and the need for periodic maintenance and required repairs to Town equipment.

When snow accumulates to three inches, Town roads will be plowed. When snow accumulates to five inches, other areas will be plowed. Winter road maintenance will not normally be done before 5:00 A.M. or after 5:00 P.M. unless conditions are severe. The priority in clearing snow is as follows:

Priority 1 - All main used Town roads, access to Town garage, and access to Fire Department locations.

Priority 2 - Business locations.

Priority 3 - Drives of permanent residents.

Priority 4 - Drives of seasonal residents and public access areas.

Priority 5 - Forest Service roads.

Sanding and salting of roads will be performed as needed.

Residents wanting information about snow clearing plans or status, seasonal residents who may be concerned about access to their property, or residents with special needs may contact the Town Chair, Karl Tauer, who may be reached at:  Rt 2 Box 500, Hiles WI 54511, Phone 715-649-3299.

Approved by Town of Hiles Board of Supervisors on July 9, 1997
